That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Guardsman register and grille cleaning in Houston typically runs between $12 and $35 per register when done as part of a full duct cleaning, or $150 to $400 for a whole-home register and grille restoration package. We stock Guardsman-compatible replacement registers and grilles on the truck, and most Houston homes can have this done the same visit we’re already there for duct work. The way most owners discover a problem is simple: they pull a register off to vacuum it, see the rust or bent louvers, and realize the grille itself is shot, not just dirty.

Registers and grilles are the visible endpoint of your duct system, and in Houston they take a beating. High humidity, constant AC cycling, and condensation around supply vents mean rust, corrosion, and paint failure show up faster here than almost anywhere else in the country. Guardsman makes solid products, but even the best register starts to look tired after five to eight years of Houston air blowing across it.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman registers and grilles come in three broad lines, and they are not interchangeable. The stamped steel line is the most common in Houston homes, usually with a bright white or almond powder-coat finish. The aluminum line runs a bit more expensive but resists rust better, which matters near the coast or in older homes with high indoor humidity. The cast aluminum decorative line shows up most often in homes built after 2010, where builders specified a heavier grille for high-traffic hallways.

The compatibility gotcha we see every week: Guardsman sizes are nominal, not exact. A grille sold as “4×10” measures roughly 3.75 inches by 9.75 inches at the outer edges, and the opening cut into the wallboard or floor is usually a quarter-inch smaller. If you order by the nominal size without measuring the actual opening, you’ll get a grille that doesn’t sit flush. Measure the opening, not the old grille, then order the Guardsman size that covers the opening with at least a half-inch lip on every side.

OEM Guardsman parts are still available for the current lines, but for stamped steel registers, quality aftermarket equivalents from Hart & Cooley or Shoemaker cost less and hold their finish just as long. Our position after years of swapping these: if the register is in a wall or ceiling, aftermarket is fine. If it’s a floor register that gets walked on, spend for OEM or the cast aluminum line, because the louver welds are the first thing to fail on cheap floor registers.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

  • Rust blooming around the louver edges. In Houston, condensation forms on the metal surface of supply registers during summer. Once the powder coat gets a scratch or wears through, rust starts within weeks, not months. Wiping it down removes surface rust but doesn’t stop what’s underneath.
  • Bent louvers that won’t straighten. Stamped steel louvers bend permanently once the metal fatigues. Every time you adjust airflow or bump it with the vacuum, the louvers drift further out of line. When you can’t get the airflow aimed right anymore, the register is done.
  • Paint flaking off in sheets. This is usually a coating adhesion failure, and it’s more common on older Guardsman units from the mid-2010s. The paint lifts away from the metal rather than wearing through. Cleaning makes it worse, not better.
  • Whistling or fluttering sounds at the register. A whistling register usually means the damper blade has loosened or warped, so air pressure makes it vibrate. Tightening the adjustment screw sometimes works, but once the plastic or metal damper is warped, it’ll start singing again.
  • The grille no longer sits flat against the wall or floor. In humid Houston summers, floor registers in particular absorb moisture and warp along the frame. If you can see a gap between the flange and the surface, the register is pulling away and needs replacement, not just cleaning.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Houston home with 8 to 12 registers, our whole-home register and grille cleaning package runs $150 to $400 depending on size, material, and condition. That includes removing each register, degreasing and sanitizing it, cleaning the register boot and the visible duct opening behind it, and either reinstalling the cleaned register or quoting a replacement if the unit is beyond saving. Individual Guardsman replacement registers run $12 to $45 depending on size and line when we install them during a visit.

You’ll get one flat price per home before we start, and it includes the cleaning, the labor, and any standard replacement registers we’ve quoted. One thing worth knowing: we don’t clean a register and put it back if it’s rusted through or warped, because that means a return visit and a worse result for you. We’ll show you the condition, give you the replacement price right there, and let you decide before anything goes back in the opening.

Service Typical Houston Price Range
Per-register cleaning (with duct cleaning) $12 – $35 each
Whole-home register & grille restoration (8 – 12 registers) $150 – $400
Guardsman replacement register (stamped steel, installed) $12 – $30 each
Guardsman replacement register (aluminum or cast, installed) $25 – $45 each

DIY or Call Us?

Register and grille cleaning is one of the few things on this parts page that an owner can genuinely do themselves, with one caution. If the register has a damper assembly, don’t soak it in water or use harsh degreaser: the damper bushing is a cheap plastic or nylon part, and once it swells, the damper never moves smoothly again. Mild soap, a soft brush, and a rinse in a utility sink is the right approach. If the register has rust, peeling paint, or bent louvers, cleaning won’t fix it. That’s a replacement job, and matching the size correctly is where most DIYers go wrong, because of the nominal-vs-actual measurement issue above.

If you’re already having us out for duct cleaning in Houston, let us handle the registers as part of the job. We’re already moving through the home, we have the replacement parts on the truck, and we’ll photograph before and after so you can see the actual result. If you’d rather just replace a few rusted registers and skip the full service, call us at (254) 347-2738 and we’ll walk you through it.
